7. What is the "Youth Surveillance Unit" of the Youth Security Guard Corps?
The Youth Security Guard Corps consists of two main divisions:
🔍 Surveillance Unit and 🛡️ Protection Unit.
The Surveillance Unit is responsible for observing and reporting any acts of school violence.
This unit mainly includes elementary school students from grades 1 to 5 who hold martial arts belts (color or black belts).
When an act of violence is witnessed, members of the Surveillance Unit are trained to:
-
First report it to the team leader (usually a 6th-grade black belt).
-
Then relay the incident to the central Youth Security Guard Corps command.
Members are allowed to operate in any area of the school where violence might occur, including secluded places.
They are trained to identify high-risk zones and remain discreet during surveillance.
Their awareness of the school environment allows them to act quickly and effectively.
Additionally, surveillance can also extend outside the school, and detailed surveillance methods are provided through specialized training sessions.
The Youth Security Guard Corps provides all Surveillance Unit members with an official ID card and certificate of appointment, giving them a sense of identity and responsibility.
Training is conducted at designated martial arts dojangs.
When students reach the 6th grade, they become eligible for promotion to the Protection Unit, motivating active participation.
Officially designated dojangs can also reward outstanding surveillance activity through commendations and awards, and in some cases, local police departments may issue formal recognition.
8. What is the "Protection Unit" of the Youth Security Guard Corps?
The Protection Unit consists of senior members, specifically 6th-grade students with high-level martial arts skills.
They serve as:
-
Leaders and guardians of the Surveillance Unit,
-
First responders when violence is reported,
-
Protectors of victimized students,
-
Coordinators with teachers, the Youth Security Guard Corps HQ, and the School Police Officers (SPOs).
These members have undergone training in self-defense techniques, arrest-and-control tactics, and expandable baton usage, as certified by the International Police Martial Arts Alliance (IPMA).
Upon successful completion of training, they are issued:
-
An official appointment certificate and
-
An ID badge recognizing their role in the Protection Unit.
These students are fully equipped to prevent violence on-site, restrain aggressors when necessary, and mobilize their fellow members while keeping communication open with school authorities and law enforcement.
